The title of Taemin's album made many fans remember the lyrics of George Michael's 1984 song, "Careless Whisper". However, in a new interview for Forbes, the SHINee maknae revealed the true meaning behind the title.
"Never Gonna Dance Again" is Taemin's newest three-part comeback series. She released the single "Never Gonna Dance Again: Prologue", "2 Kids" in August this year. Then, the album "Never Gonna Dance Again: Act 1" was released in September, along with the title track "Criminal".
The final piece, "Never Gonna Dance Again: Act 2", is expected to be released later this year. However, fans have been discussing the title of the album's series since it was revealed in July. Many thought the title was a reference to George Michael's 1984 hit, "Careless Whisper", which featured catchy lyrics that read "I'll never dance again, guilty legs lack rhythm."
Because of this, some fans even expected one of the songs in "Act 1" to sample "Careless Whisper". However, when the album was released, there was absolutely no relationship between the two. This of course made many fans confused.
Luckily, Taemin finally explained why he chose the title in a new interview for Forbes. When the interviewer said he was worried "Never Gonna Dance Again" meant Taemin was preparing to retire, Taemin explained that the title was a bit "ironic". It all has to do with his career as an idol.
Taemin admitted that over the years, many people have expected bigger and better looks from him. In response to that, his rebellious side came to the thought, "I'll never dance again".
But instead of rebelling against dancing, Taemin's thought for the album was "rebelling against expectations". Taemin emphasized, "I tried to say, 'I'll never dance again in this style that people expect',"
In that way, Taemin said "Never Gonna Dance Again" represented the deeper meaning of him "starting over" and resetting his career. Luckily, that means fans have a lot to look forward to in the future.
As the final part of the album series release, Taemin revealed that he hopes "Never Gonna Dance Again" reconstructs "the way of people, (him) as an artist in person". What do you think?
