Bangtan Boys (BTS) did not succeed in bringing home the trophy of victory at the 2021 Grammy Awards, but there is no doubt that their performance was extraordinary as usual. One of the most impressive parts is the way Big Hit Entertainment is remaking all of the GRAMMY Awards venues in South Korea.
According to the GRAMMY showrunner, the way Big Hit prepared the stage set in such a short amount of time also impressed them. In an interview with Rolling Stone, GRAMMY showrunner, Ben Winston explained that the Recording Academy originally planned for all performing artists to fly to Los Angeles, California to record their performances.
However, given the current pandemic situation, BTS and two other artists were unable to attend. "This has mainly to do with health and safety, and immigration issues," said Ben Winston.
Of course, this isn't the first time BTS has recorded a show remotely. They have been part of several US productions of South Korean convenience since the pandemic began, including appearances on The Late Late Show with James Corden.
Winston, who was involved in booking BTS's appearance on the show, was amazed when he received a video of their performance. "They didn't tell us anything about the show. They just sent a video. They sent this video, and I'll never forget to open it," said Winston.
Part of BTS's mesmerizing performance GRAMMY showrunners appeared at the end of "Dynamite", when the group performed with an identical replica of the original set for The Late Late Show. According to Winston, they do everything right, from chairs to signboards to mugs on the table.
"It was a huge undertaking, and everything was very precise. They really learned it," explained Winston in amazement.
While remembering this performance, Ben Winston got the idea for BTS and Big Hit Entertainment to remake the GRAMMY set as well. However, unfortunately they only have three weeks left, maybe less until the main event is held.
"When I talked to BTS management, I said, 'Look, you did a great job for The Late Late Show. Since you can't be here, do you think you can do that?'," Asked Winston.
While most would reject the idea of remaking an expensive and complex set in such a short amount of time, Big Hit Entertainment agreed. This marked the birth of BTS's amazing performance at the Grammy Awards.
That said, some might say their performance on the rooftops of actual skyscrapers was even more impressive. Ben Winston noted that one "wonderful" thing about BTS's GRAMMY Awards set was that they turned their flowers into Korean roses "as a small nod to their place".
In the end, the showrunner described BTS's performance as "outstanding", "absolutely brilliant", and worthy of breaking its original mandate in Los Angeles. "Their performance was incredible. It didn't cut it. It wasn't a music video. It was a live performance. It was live vocals," confessed Ben Winston. (wk / daughter)
